JICL Spring 2018 Symposium

Best Practices in Rights Clearance

Thursday, January 18, 2018 at Antonin Scalia Law School, George Mason University

1:00 pm – 7:00 pm

Panel 1: Understanding the Legal and Business Environment Visual Artists Work In The digital media marketplace has brought challenges and opportunities for visual artists. Panelists with experience navigating the business, legal and regulatory landscape for the arts will lay the groundwork to help artists both experienced and new to this space identify issues to be alert to in their creative work.

Panel 2: A Discussion with Visual Artists

Visual artists, like other artists may both include the work of others in their work, and find that other creators have used their work.  What norms, whether formal or informal do they follow in determining when and whether to seek permission?  What do they expect of one another? What resources are available?  What gaps do they see in the law/public understanding?  What questions do they have?
